Senior Programme/NCEA
NCEA NEWS (August 2025)
The government announced this week that they are making significant changes to the education system with the dismantling of NCEA. NCEA has been the predominant national assessment system for senior high school since 2002, but now it will be replaced by a foundation qualification in Year 11 (focusing on literacy and numeracy) and subject specific national qualifications at Years 12 and 13.
This is the most significant change in secondary education since the inception of NCEA. Public consultation on the proposal is open until 15 September 2025. We have put a Ministry of Education detailed summary of the proposal on our website, which includes a QR code where you can present your feedback. Click HERE to access the proposal.
Students begin to specialise at this level and we prepare all our Year 11 students to achieve NCEA Level 1. We aim to meet the diverse needs of our learners by providing alternative programmes and offering support for individual students.
At Year 12 and 13 we are able to offer vocational and academic programmes as well as individualising a course of study involving work experience, work exploration and GATEWAY.
We recognise that students in our Senior College are young adults, and we endeavour to support them to make good choices and to consolidate a strong foundation for their future career. Individualised programmes can be created. Pastoral care is available through the form teacher and relevant Dean, the Careers Advisor and College Counsellors. We are able to access a range of other community resources as required. The Head of Pastoral needs is Mr Brenton Hackfath, Deputy Principal.
